New York state high school boys lacrosse games won't be played Wednesday due to diminished air quality from the Canadian wildfires.

The NYSPHSAA announced Wednesday morning that eight state boys lacrosse games have been moved to later this week. All outdoor practice sessions were canceled for Thursday.

The boys lacrosse east semifinals will now be played Friday at UAlbany, while the west semifinals will take place at Tompkins Cortland Community College and Homer High School.

The finals will be played Sunday at Hofstra University.

The NYSPHSAA said in a tweet that games will not be played with AQI exceeding 100.

“Unfortunately, the air quality does not appear to be improving in the next 24 hours to a level that will provide a safe environment for student-athletes to participate at the highest level,” Dr. Robert Zayas, NYSPHSAA executive director, said in a statement. “NYSPHSAA is dedicated to hosting all state championship events this Spring for the student-athletes who have earned the right to compete for the title of state champion.”

Pre-purchased tickets will be honored for the new dates and times. Spectators that have already purchased tickets but are no longer able to attend may contact service@gofan.co.
