A 12-year-old girl was found shot and killed Thursday night at an apartment in Midtown Kingston, and a nine-year-old boy was shot but will survive, Kingston Police said.
Police were called to the rear apartment of 60 Van Buren Street at about 8 p.m. to find the girl fatally shot and the boy shot on the arm. The boy was taken to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital, and was last listed in stable condition, according to a press release from KPD.
Circumstances of the shooting were unclear Thursday morning as New York State Police were still processing the scene, and suspect information was not yet available.
Neighbors told Spectrum News they were close with the mother and several children who live at the home.
Neighbor and local activist Ismail Shabazz said his granddaughter was still crying Friday morning over the loss of her friend.
Shabazz, also a certified anger management counselor, has been active in addressing senseless gun violence in Kingston over the last six months.
“This is ridiculous,” he said, shaking his head. “When you have a gun fire, you can’t guarantee it’s going to go after the person you want. This is an example. A 12-year-old girl is dead. She plays with my granddaughter. She’s dead because of this foolishness.”
Mayor Steve Noble offered condolences Friday morning, and promised a thorough investigation.
“The City of Kingston and its partners will dedicate every single resource to find out who is responsible for this horrific act,” he wrote in a Facebook post.
State Police are leading the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call 845-338-1702.
At 6pm, we’ll hear from family and friends of 12-year-old Dj’aneira Mason, who was shot and killed. They want someone to speak up. This has changed this neighborhood forever. Was just at a vigil at the house, and it was heart wrenching. What a horrible day. pic.twitter.com/tl8ZvDFUCS
