People in the Town of Monroe are now looking to the future after residents voted to split the town in half and create the Town of Palm Tree.

The proposal passed overwhelmingly Tuesday. Now, leaders from the village of Kiryas Joel and the Town of Monroe turn their focus to ironing out a separation plan to create this new town.

United Monroe, the group that led to the campaign for the separation, says each side will benefit.

"It's really a win-win," said co-founder Michael Egan. "We separate the village of Kiryas Joel, which now becomes the town of Palm Tree. It gets a bit more land -- not much, just 56 acres -- and goes their own way. And the town of Monroe does the same. And hopefully we get away from fighting and we become better neighbors with each other."

Palm Tree won't officially incorporate until 2020, unless a bill is passed by the state legislature that speeds up the process. The village administrator of Kiryas Joel said in a statement that the vote results are an "historic step, providing a framework for peace and stability for both communities and [their] educational institutions."
