An SUV carrying six people went through a stop sign and was struck by a tractor trailer Monday in Westerlo, killing one person and critically injuring three others, according to preliminary report provided at the scene from Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple.
The collission occured at around 10:30 a.m., when the tractor trailer heading north on Route 401 broadsided the SUV, whose driver failed to stop while moving west on Route 404, Apple said.
“The trucker never had a chance to avoid the car,” he said, citing dashcam footage from the incident.
The SUV was occupied by six people, including three children ages 10-16, who were traveling to the Zoom Flume Water Park in Greene County. One person was killed and three other passengers were taken in critical condition by ambulance and a helicopter to hospital, Apple said.
The trailer came to a stop "almost on its side," and was leaking diesel near a reservoir that supplies water to the city of Albany, Apple said. A hazmat team had arrived at the site to assist.
The intersection has been the site of prior accidents, the sheriff said.
Assisting the Albany County Sheriff’s Office at the scene were members of the New York State Police, Westerlo Fire Department, Greenville Ambulance, Green County Paramedics and Durham Ambulance.
