LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Even with no racing, Monday of Derby Week was a perfect day to visit Churchill Downs.

What You Need To Know

  • Monday is dark, but plenty of fans took advantage to tour Churchill Downs

Atlanta’s Tanisha Hooker said visiting Churchill Downs was a “bucket list” item.

“It is amazing. Just spectacular. Just always been a bucket list to come here, enjoy the races, see all the fashion. Wear a beautiful dress. Wear a beautiful hat,” Hooker told Spectrum News.

All the action was happening on the Backside of Churchill Downs with morning workouts so the crowds on the Paddock side were light, making a tour of the track feel more like a VIP backstage pass. Hooker has a ticket to Thurby but couldn’t wait until then to explore Churchill. “You know, the history, the horses, the anticipation!” Hooked added.

Monday was also a big day for many Churchill staff members, as they got their first look at their office for the week. It’ll be a busy stretch, but also a once in a lifetime opportunity.

“It is a lot of work but at the same time, like I said, the energy is just incredible, and you don’t feel the pain. The enthusiasm of the people and the energy is just incredible,” Raouf Sassi of Queens, New York said Monday.

In fact, a large contingent of New Yorkers are working the track this week. We spoke to Romano Johnson touring the track near the owner’s boxes.

“So, I’m taking in this moment because I know this is a prestigious spot I’m in. So, right now I’m just taking it in and appreciating the experience and I’m just happy to be able to have this right now,” Johnson said.

The real fun starts Tuesday, or 502’s Day. Gates open at 11:30 a.m. The first race is at 12:45 p.m.
