Kauai County’s Department of Public Works has alerted the public to roughly 6,000 gallons of wastewater that spilled into nearby properties at the Wailua Coco Palms Sewer Pump Station between 4 and 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

The contaminated water did not reach state waters, according to officials, and the “ponded material was pumped down” and the area disinfected.

The spill was caused by failed electrical components that affected the primary pumps and backup generators.

The Wastewater Management Division is working on electrical repairs to prevent future incidents.
