BREVARD, N.C. — Two boys were killed when a tree fell on their home in Transylvania County early Sunday, authorities said.
Rescue workers arriving at a single-wide trailer on Okies Drives in Brevard after 3:30 a.m. found an uprooted tree had fallen on the home, Fire Chief Matthew Owen of Connestee Fire Rescue stated in a social media post.
Survivors said two boys, 11 and 13, remained trapped in a bedroom. When firefighters reached the children, they had succumbed to their injuries, Owen said. The bodies were removed about 6:30 a.m. after the tree, which was three feet in diameter, was cut and lifted.
Five residents lived in the home, and the three others escaped unharmed, the chief of the volunteer fire department said. He did not release the boys' names.
A firefighter suffered a minor injury but was treated and released.
The Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating.
A storm system pushed through western North Carolina on Saturday night, and the National Weather Service warned of severe weather with gusty winds in the southwestern North Carolina mountains.
That storm system caused deaths and destruction Saturday as it drove through the Deep South before reaching the Carolinas. At least 37 other people were killed, including three in Alabama, six in Mississippi and three in Arkansas.
Tornado Watches extended through Sunday morning for parts of the Carolinas, east Georgia and northern Florida.
