On Tuesday, the Hawaii Department of Health issued Brown Water Advisories for two Oahu beaches — Kailua Beach and Waimanalo Beach Park.
After storms or heavy rain, coastal waters tend to appear brown or murky and may contain a higher-than-normal level of pollutants. DOH officials recommend the public stay out of the water for at least 48 to 72 hours after the rain has stopped and after the beach has been in the sun.
DOH also advises people to not swim or wade in or drink water from freshwater streams or ponds to prevent leptospirosis, a bacterial infection caused by the Leptospira bacteria.
