State officials are warning about mosquitoes carrying a potentially deadly disease across New York.

The New York State Department of Health says it is concerned about multiple cases of eastern equine encephalitis found in horses in Saint Lawrence, Madison, Oneida, Orange, Ulster, Cayuga, Wayne and Washington counties.

They say that the virus can only be spread through mosquito bites and so far, there are no confirmed human cases in the state.

Severe cases can include symptoms such as headache, fever, chills, vomiting, disorientation and seizures.

The state advises people in those affected counties to take precautions against mosquitoes, including using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves, and removing any standing water around your home and property.
