Candidates Didi Barrett and Claire Cousin are gearing up for the Democratic primary in New York’s 106th state Assembly District.

Barrett has held the seat in the state Legislature for 12 years since being elected in a special election in March 2012.

“I’ve always loved my district, and it's been a great honor to be able to work for the people of 106 Assembly District, and I look forward to continuing to do that,” Barrett said.

Cousin is in her second term as a member of the Columbia County Board of Supervisors. She’s worked to advocate for a variety of state bills.

“I understand firsthand what the issues are, and I’ve worked tirelessly as an advocate to create solutions,” Cousin said.

Barret said the biggest issues facing the 106th District involve economic and environmental sustainability.

“It's really important that we make sure that the voices of the people of this district are heard in Albany,” Barrett said.

Cousin believes affordability, climate and housing justice are all issues that need addressing.

“Those are currently issues that I’m facing,” Cousin said. “I know that my lived experience is what I’m bringing with me to the Assembly.”

The 106th Assembly District covers most of Columbia County and parts of northern Dutchess County.

Registered Democrats in the 106th Assembly District can vote for either candidate in the primary election on June 25. Early voting runs through June 23.
