Folks in Highland Falls dealing with the aftermath of devastating flooding are getting a huge boost.

Samaritan's Purse, an evangelical Christian group that provides humanitarian aid, are providing that boost. It's assisting the cleanup by providing free services like cleaning out and removing ruined belongings from damaged basements.

They’ve got about 70 volunteers, working their way through just as many requests for cleanups. Since arriving last week, they’ve helped clean 10 households.

“A lot of elderly in the community, a lot of retired in the community who just physically couldn't get that stuff up and out of their basements to the street," said the group's regional program manager Shannon Daley. "And so our volunteers for Samaritan's Purse can walk alongside them, and help do that heavy lifting to let them know that they are not alone."

On Maple Avenue, they were working to clean out the basement of 90-year-old residents who suffered more than two feet of flooding. Their neighbor, Arla James, who’s become something of a caretaker for them, said the assistance fits right in with the community’s closeness.

“You don't need to be in Sacred Heart to help out," she said, referring to the Red Cross shelter held at Sacred Heart of Jesus School in the village. "What you do for your neighbors, checking on them, that they’re OK, they're not doing crazy. I think for me, that's a hero already."
