Spreading holiday spirit to families who help sacrifice to protect our nation is the goal behind an annual Christmas giveaway program making its way back around.
It's a familiar concept for Farmside Acres owner Robert Nannini, who has been helping bring free Christmas trees to military families for 14 years.
What You Need To Know
- These trees will be donated to military families across the country
- Program organizers estimate 15,300 total trees picked up from 54 locations to be given to 84 bases
- Farmside Acres collected roughly 1,620 trees alone
“We were involved in the New York State Christmas Tree Growers Association, and one of the gentlemen here said we're doing a fundraiser for Trees for Troops who want to get involved. And they needed a place to pick up for FedEx and pick up the trees. So, our farm happened to be in a perfect spot,” said Nannini.
For him, donating through the Christmas Spirit Foundation and Fed-Ex partnership is personal.
“My father and my father-in-law was a veteran. World War II veterans," he said.
According to Nannini, this year, Farmside Acres will collect its 10,000th donated tree, and with the help of local students from Cornwall Elementary, will load them up in the FedEx trucks.
“I have two grandkids in elementary school here. And both of those classes they wanted to come, so they're all excited,” said Nannini.
One of his grandchildren, Ronin Rivas, said he really enjoys doing this.
“I like putting them in the truck,” said Rivas.
Another volunteer who also happens to be a veteran said this kind gesture goes a long way.
“I mean, it's a lot. Just being a veteran alone, just seeing all the camaraderie and people getting together and the people that care about our veterans,” said veteran volunteer Michael Waite.
