Remember Rocky the Owl, who made headlines after being rescued from the 2020 Rockefeller Christmas tree?
Well, he's back in the spotlight. Well, several tributes of him are popping up across Saugerties.
Among those who contributed to the flock of owls featured in this year's street art tradition is Mark Smith, chairman of the Saugerties Chamber of Commerce, which organized the event.
“The whole part of the program is to bring tourists to town to see the art," he said. "Also, to show off local artists and their talent.”
In 2020, Rocky the Owl was found in the Rockefeller tree in Times Square, then relocated to Ravensbeard Wildlife Center in Saugerties for rehabilitation and release.
To honor what he meant to the community, 35 recreations and interpretations of Rocky are located all over the streets of town.
Local businesses sponsor artists based on themes and designs that resonate.
Saugerties artist Tara Bach is another with an owl on display.
“I figured I’d stop by and check on it every once in a while, just to make sure it looks pretty good,” she said.
The owls will eventually be auctioned off, with proceeds split between the artists, Ravensbeard and a scholarship program.
“I’ve been doing this since 2014, and because it always changes, you never know what the structure is made out of," Bach said. "I was like, ‘let’s just cut it open.' So I cut this keyhole in it. I was like ‘perfect,’ a keyhole, an owl, wisdom. I love symbology.”
She took an emerald theme and let her inspiration fly. Just like Rocky, she spread her wings.
“When you have something like an owl and it’s symbology of wisdom, and you think about life, life lessons and all those ebbs and flows, I just wanted to encompass all of those things,” Bach said.
