With warmer weather returning to the Hudson Valley, Sullivan County is gearing up for an influx of new visitors with its annual countywide Litter Pluck.

You can call Jamie Ferriero a litter pluck expert. Every morning before most people even have their coffee, Ferriero hits the road to clear litter with her bin and plucker in tow.

"It just makes your community look so much nicer," said Ferriero, the town of Thompson's beautification coordinator.

She said she enjoys keeping the town where she grew up in pristine condition.

"Well, it's making my house look nicer, my road. And we have adopted a road. Everybody who adopts a road should be cleaning up their part of the road," said Ferriero.

She takes the litter personally.

"It ticks me off. It's like every day, somebody throws something out the window, and I'm back out there cleaning it up," she said.

That’s why she’s so excited for Sullivan County’s annual Litter Pluck, a chance for community members to pluck litter from the roads in their own community.

From April 1 to June 30, residents can pick up their Litter Pluck coupons that allow them to dump all that roadside and trail litter they pick up for free at their local dump. They can receive free garbage bags too.

The Litter Pluck is one way the county works to clean up ahead of the busy spring and summer seasons, when tourists and campgoers often triple Sullivan County’s population.

"You're coming in here. You want it to look beautiful, you don’t want it to look like a mess," said Ferriero.

And you’d be surprised by what she finds. From cans to car parts and takeout bags, she filled an entire bag in just an hour.

She hopes others will pitch in and respect the area by not littering and helping to clean and preserve the area for everyone to enjoy.

You can pick up your Litter Pluck coupons and bags at your town or village hall from April 1 to June 30.
