Social media has become the driver behind an effort to get neighbors together to clean up the city of Newburgh.

Resident Maggie Mehr is at the front of a new group of city beautifiers, saying the trash in Newburgh has gotten so bad, she felt she needed to do something about it.

That's when she had the idea to form the Facebook group, "Keep Newburgh Beautiful," and it's grown to nearly 1,000 members.

“I’ve lived in Newburgh for 31 years and I love it so much, I love the architecture and the people, but I hate the trash,” said Mehr.

Mehr runs the group with the help of her friend, Linda Jansen, and other volunteers. The group goes around different streets every Thursday morning in search of trash.

“We've met some wonderful people that have actually joined us in their neighborhood and we've met people actually take care of their homes and in front of the homes and they're happy that we're coming out to get the whole neighborhood clean,” said Jansen.

Maggie says she’s received an outpouring of support from members in the community. She says she hopes everyone can do their part to keep the city beautiful.
