Changes at Schenectady High School are going into effect today. The school, like many others across the country, is reporting a range of issues related to school anxiety, negative behaviors and a rise in violence

To help address the issues, school leaders announced plans to "reset and reengage." Starting today, the high school is switching to block scheduling.

Leaders say this will allow for fewer transitions, limiting potential COVID-19 exposure and reducing opportunities for violent behavior. Transition time is increasing to 10 minutes to allow students and staff more time to reset between classes.

They say under this model, students only need to be prepared for four classes a day. It also gives teachers more time with their students to get to know their students' learning needs more deeply.

Students, parents and staff members have all voiced their concern. School leaders say they hope these changes along with partnering with family members will help keep students on the right track.
