Walking out of any tunnel in any stadium, fans expect to be met with sunshine and cheering fanbases, not stuffed anacondas or a giant wolf mascot. But then again, how many have had the chance to see a game at Army’s West Point?

Things at Michie Stadium are done a little differently, and that extends to the Corps of Cadets. It’s a jungle out there. We dropped into the trenches of the Corps to understand the battle between companies.

“Sometimes, they steal the heads of your mascot and throw them over the wall,” Private Cadet Madison Doyle explained.

It’s ruthless among the 36 companies that make up the Corps.

What You Need To Know

  • With each score, the cadets start at zero and match the point total with push-ups

  • The Black Knights are averaging 44 points a game so far this season

  • 36 companies make up the Corps of Cadets that compete in the student section

Doyle is a member of the Guppy H2 Company, whose slogan is “Happy as Hell.” As a play on words, they chose a smiley face emoji costume to represent them in a sea of fatigues. Coincidentally, the costume is strategically made in one piece to ensure no costume heads are stolen and thrown over the edge of the stadium.

But that’s not all.

A football game is undoubtedly a workout, and it may seem out of the ordinary, but that extends to what happens in the Corps at Michie.

The cadets start at zero and push themselves to the limit. That’s not an exaggeration when your team is averaging 44 points a game, and you match every score with a round of push-ups to celebrate.

“We just did 35, and it was a lot,” said Doyle.

Weird celebration, but what do we know?

While being interviewed, cannons went off, indicating another Black Knight touchdown.

Doyle's “Do I have to push?” and pleading look is met with nods from the cadets around her. Soon enough, she’s on the ground.

The good news for her was there’s company in misery, and members from each company joined to celebrate accordingly. As the kick sailed through the uprights, the cadets pushed up and through their last rep and met the total of points Army football put up that day.

So far this season, Army has scored 133 points and remains undefeated. Saturday’s game against Miami of Ohio may bring a similar result.
