Newburgh school board members voted to appoint a second civil rights investigator this week, but offered little information on the matter being investigated.
The first investigator, Louis Patack, was appointed during an Aug. 13 special meeting to “perform investigations in accordance with applicable school district policies,” according to a board resolution.
Sources speaking on the condition of anonymity have previously confirmed the school board hired Patack, of the New York State Public Employment Relations Board, to investigate a complaint filed against an administrator just after several administrators returned from an educators conference in San Diego that ended Aug. 11.
The administrator was suspended Aug. 20.
What You Need To Know
- Tuesday’s school board resolution appointing the second investigator, Melinda Gordon, was worded exactly as the August resolution appointing Louis Patack
- School officials have not said which employee was suspended in mid-August
- Superintendent Roberto Padilla has been absent from his job since mid-August
Tuesday’s school board resolution appointing the second investigator, Melinda Gordon, was worded exactly the same as the August resolution appointing Patack.
Hired at $250 per hour each, they are looking into possible violations of federal civil rights statutes Title VII and Title IX and/or state human rights laws.
It is unclear whether Gordon has been contracted to investigate the complaint against the administrator, or to investigate another matter.
Newburgh Schools Superintendent Roberto Padilla has been absent from his job since the complaint was filed.
Board members only mentioned Padilla’s absence once, when they appointed Ed Forgit as acting superintendent during the board’s Aug. 24 meeting.
Neither the district clerk nor the school board’s attorney were immediately available for comment for this story.
