As coronavirus cases continue to climb across New York, Ulster County hopes to get more people vaccinated this week at its county fair.

A little more than 75% of the county's adult population is fully vaccinated, and County Executive Pat Ryan is hoping to capture remaining holdouts at the Ulster County Fair, which starts Tuesday.

In addition to food vendors, rides and games, visitors to the fair this year will see a pop-up vaccination site that will be available from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Through a partnership between the county Health Department and the state, attendees over the age of 12 will be able to receive a shot.

Ryan said the delta variant makes this a critical time for people to get vaccinated.

“My worry is, if we don't get ahead of this delta variant in Ulster County, right now we're doing OK, but we see what's happening around us in places that aren't highly vaccinated. So we have a window now, a tight window, but a window to do the right thing to ramp up our vaccinations, and I think that could keep us from seeing a more wide spread of the delta variant," Ryan said.

Those 12 to 17 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Ryan said that while the county is considering providing incentives to get vaccinated, the biggest incentive is that vaccine recipients are receiving a potentially lifesaving shot.
