The hiss of the steamer and the eye-opening aroma of freshly ground beans will draw coffee lovers from across Kingston to the Ulster Avenue Hannaford supermarket to do their grocery shopping, as they get their cherished caffeine fix while at the same time, picking up their produce for the week.

“A lot of people don't really like shopping for groceries, but they like getting their coffee, so [they] do both at the same time,” says All That Java barista Lindsey McDonough.

Locally-owned All That Java has teamed up with the supermarket to open its first full-service coffee kiosk inside the store, bringing a menu of espresso-based and brewed hot and iced coffee drinks to its customers.

What You Need To Know

  • Hannaford shoppers can enjoy a cup of coffee while they shop for their weekly groceries

  • All That Java is the supermarket's first full-service coffee kiosk inside the store

  • The kiosk offers a menu of espresso-based and brewed hot and iced coffee drinks

  • The kiosk is managed by trained baristas from the Culinary Institute of America

Hannaford manager Tom McFall says it's a perfect match for the store to support the local community.

All That Java founder Samantha Sapienza modeled her business after the small shops she saw while living in Seattle. She brought the idea to the Hudson Valley in 2016, and for the last year, has been selling her coffee products in the store before working on opening the kiosk.

“Soon after I'd open, one day I just thought, 'wait a minute. We put All that Java in grocery stores here, there aren't, they don't exist here on the East Coast.' And then, I just first thought of Hannaford because I personally loved Hannaford,” says Sapienza.

The kiosk is managed by trained baristas from the Culinary Institute of America.

McDonough says she's applying what she's learning every day: “Knowing which ingredients are the best to use, as well as knowing how they're going to interact with each other, it's very important, especially with consistency.

“When you go to a coffee shop, you want your coffee to taste the same every time, especially when you order the same thing.”

The shop inside the Hannaford on Ulster Avenue is open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week.
