The city of Newburgh received half a million dollars from the CARES act back in March and are using most of it for emergency income payments for city residents.
People who qualify can expect to see this money within a few weeks, covering up to three months of back rent.
“The emergency income can cover costs especially housing costs that need to be covered because of loss of income related to covid,” says Alexandra Church, director of planning and development for the city of Newburgh.
Church says to qualify, you must be a city of Newburgh resident who is facing a loss of housing due to the pandemic.

“So for any reason your income was reduced during covid whether that was voluntary because you had to leave your job to take care of children for example. Or involuntary, if you lost your job because you were laid off or your position was eliminated,” Church said.
In addition to the money for Newburgh residents, there are several different pots of emergency money residents all over Orange County can apply for.
“We encourage anyone who thinks they may qualify to call and we will screen them,” Church said.
