Talia Barnes of Poughkeepsie collected dozens of toys from the community to donate to children that need it this season.

"It makes me feel really good. I’m really glad I was able to do this," Barnes said. "I wanted to help the homeless. It’s been something I’ve always wanted to do."

Her mother, Alyssa Barnes, said she was so happy to assist Talia for her Bat Mitzvah project, now that she’s turned 13.

"I was amazed at what my friends contributed," Alyssa Barnes said. "We collected over 70 boxes of jewelry, over 40 toys. One friend went out and bought four brand new bikes."

Alyssa Barnes connected with Kingston resident Lisa Boyer on Facebook. Boyer was searching for game consoles, gently used, and new toys for families in need. That's when Talia Barnes jumped in to help.

"I created this relationship with Lisa, who I had never met before and had been working together on this. I met her only a week ago, and now we’re talking about future projects, and future ways to get the community together," Alyssa Barnes said.

Boyer is the founder of Kingston group "Youth for Change."

"I think it’s important that we take care of each other," Boyer said. "Talia really showed us all the difference that one person can make. And we have to keep building. There’s power in numbers."

Talia has one message for other children considering giving back during this time. "Just do it. You should help. It feels really good," she said.

And they are still collecting donations. Visit Alyssa Barnes' Facebook page here.
