The start of the winter season is just two weeks away, and some residents in Newburgh got their hands on some warm clothes just in time thanks to Melanin Unchained.

What You Need To Know

  • Community group Melanin Unchained held a clothing drive outside of city hall this weekend

  • The group handed out winter clothes and jackets to residents

  • The group works to better the Newburgh community with weekly street clean ups and educational seminars

“We wanted to make sure the clothes that we got is directly into the hands of the people that need it,” says Melanin Unchained President Amir Barksdale.

The group held a clothing drive and giveaway across the street from Newburgh City Hall on Sunday. Residents in need were able to pick up clothes, shoes, and even stuffed animals for kids and adults of all ages.

“[What] we plan to do is inspire the kids," Barksdale said. "That's why it's important for us to be out here and show them that somebody like you is doing what needs to be done; and hopefully when they grow up, they can do the same thing and create a new cycle of people that’s given back and really care for the community.”

Melanin Unchained started over the summer during the protests for George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. The group works to help the Newburgh community with weekly street clean-ups and educational seminars.

“I believe you get what you give. So, if you do good, you'll feel good. You'll get good. That’s how I’ve lived my life,” says Barksdale.

Melanin Unchained hopes to host weekly workshops and monthly seminars once it's safe to do so.
