“Oftentimes I think everybody feels like this is done behind the scenes or it's an inside thing or it's, you know, a smoke filled back room type of thing. So, what we're doing is actually being transparent and public,” says Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan.

The commission was established in the county charter to make sure there was equal and fair representation in county government. “You want to make sure it's not done in a way that has any politics involved or any partisan politics involved where someone might try to skew things one way or the other,” says Ryan

To be on the commission you must be at least 18, a current county resident, and cannot be an elected official or a member of a political party’s committee. “People don't realize, many of the biggest decisions about programs that affect you are made at this local level. So, while the state and federal boundaries are really important. Of course, I would argue, these are just as if not more important,” Ryan says.
