Newburgh Police detectives were in a neighborhood just east of Mount Saint Mary's College on Monday, seeking information from neighbors about a shooting that wounded one man and killed an innocent bystander.

Detectives said, at about 11:15 p.m. Saturday, shots were fired among a group of about 15 people just north of the intersection of Liberty and Clinton streets. Upon arrival, police found Almighty Ward, 18, who had been shot in the leg. Police said they transported Ward to the hospital in a police cruiser.

Just south of the intersection, about 100 yards from where the shots were fired, Aned Alberto Alvarado-Baquedano, 35, was at a party with about 30 other people when he was hit in the neck, police said.

"He was an innocent bystander in every sense of the word," Detective Lieutenant Joseph Burns said on Monday morning. "He was at a party, complete with a piñata, and basically took a stray round."

Burns said police are looking through surveillance video and speaking to eye-witnesses for clues to help identify a suspect.

"We're hoping that someone knows something," he said. "We're hoping that someone comes forward and provides some information to help put whoever this person was in prison."

Not everyone is cooperating.

After being taken to St. Luke's Hospital in Cornwall by police on Saturday evening, Ward then checked himself out of the hospital on Sunday and declined to speak with investigators, Burns said.

Ward is not currently facing any charges, Burns added.

Neighbors were resistant to share any information.

Police are in the early stages of the investigation, and cannot yet disclose a motive for the shooting.

Burns said he knows "the streets are talking," and he hopes that information eventually gets to detectives.
