Tensions were high at a board of education meeting in Newburgh, as the relocation of the South Middle School principal was approved.
Dr. Lisa Buon will be moving to Balmville Elementary School. And many parents aren't happy.
They've come out protesting the move, calling for Superintendent Roberto Padilla to maintain her position. Newburgh City Councilwoman Hillary Rayford, who organized the large community presence at the meeting, said replacing Dr. Buon can only hurt the middle school's students.
"Whether you're black, brown, or white, she's for all the students," said Rayford of Buon. "And so was most of the staff she had at South Middle School. And after tonight, she's out of there."
Padilla took heat from Buon's supporters, with some saying her relocation was motivated by discrimination. Despite calls for him to resign, the school board approved Padilla's contract until 2024.
