A son is suspected of shooting and killing his father at New Paltz Plaza Saturday morning, before later killing himself.

Authorities were called to the Plaza Diner parking lot around 11 a.m., finding 58-year-old Andrew Kaartine shot and unresponsive.

He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Police say someone saw a car leaving the area soon after an Ulster County Sheriff's Deputy saw Kaartine's son, Jeremy S. Kaartine, 22, speeding on the Thruway, and tried to pull him over.

They say the car crashed, and Kaartine was found dead, having shot himself.

Authorities are still investigating, but say there is no danger to the public.

Earlier, New Paltz police were asking people to stay away from the plaza area, but have since cleared that alert.
