A creek just south of Stewart Air National Guard Base is full of firefighting foam. Contractors have been on scene since Saturday, using boons-and-pumps to trap-and-remove it.

The Department of Environmental Conservation says C6 foam spilled in a hangar owned by Atlantic Aviation, and then escaped a retention pond, sending it into Silver Stream.

C6 foam was made to replace another type of foam that once released PFOS and PFOA into the Newburgh water system.

Still, this weekend's incident was especially upsetting to people who dealt with water contamination from chemicals from the base in the past.

"I was with a friend, my anxiety went through the roof. I started shaking, I got very upset, it was very disturbing," said neighbor Cindy Mac.

Spectrum News reached out to Atlantic Aviation to find out more about how the foam was released and how much was released, and are awaiting a response.
