State Senators Jen Metzger and James Skoufis say the state budget is a win for local nursing homes.
The original budget proposal had more than $123 million in nursing home cuts across the state. For Valley View Center in Goshen, it would have been more than $4 million. The senators say the cuts would have been made retroactively, and would have had to be paid immediately.
While there won't be cuts now, that doesn't mean it saves nursing homes in future budgets.
"The governor wanted to see a certain level of cuts; we said 'no, you have to look at this' ... this needs to be need-based, so you have to look, so there's no set target," Metzger said.
The senators say there will be a work group with people, including nursing home representatives, to get accurate data on nursing home needs, so that if funding does need to be changed down the road, they hope it won't be drastic cuts. There's no set date yet on when that work group will meet.
