Spectrum News has learned an immigrant man and his son have received a lifeline from their deportation officer.

They are going to be able to stay in Kingston, for now.

We spoke with the father, Pedro, just before he was scheduled for deportation last week. Friends and family made a plea to his deportation officer for more time to make his asylum case.

We are told the deportation officer conveyed that request to the court. The court agreed.

Pedro and his son were among the first in a wave of families from the same village in Northern Guatemala to come to Kingston.

Their case could be an indicator of what's ahead for about 60 families who came after them.
