Ulster County swears in its 88th County Sheriff.

Juan Figueroa, a former Marine and New York State Trooper, will serve in this role for the next four years.

He defeated incumbent Sheriff Paul Van Blarcum back in November.

Figueroa's top priorities include tackling the opioid crisis, building trust in the community and decreasing recidivism rates.

One of his ideas is to help low level offenders find work, to decrease likelihood of future crimes.

"The younger kids, people in their 20s and 30s that made one mistake, I'm going to join the Chamber of Commerces in the tri-county area and ask these businesses, you need people to work... well there are some folks out there that made one mistake, why not give them a chance?,” he said.

Figueroa said his top priority is community policing and building relationships within the community.
