Port Jervis loves its firefighters, and nothing shows it more than the annual parade with a long-standing tradition.
The community lined the streets around the city Saturday to celebrate the 168th annual Port Jervis Fire Department Inspection Day parade.
This year's event honored three Port Jervis firefighters with more than 120 years of combined service among them as grand marshals for the event.
"When your peers come up to you and look you in the eye and with a smile say, ‘Congratulations’ and shake your hand, I tell you sometimes I get goosebumps from it," says 50-year veteran Cpt. Russell Scott.
The event began as a way for fire departments to show the fitness of their fire equipment to make sure it's ready for service calls. Multiple fire departments across the country parade before judges and compete for trophies based on their presentation.
