Two animal shelters in the Hudson Valley are set to benefit from a first of its kind state-funded program that will provide nearly $5 million in capital throughout the state.

Governor Andrew Cuomo is introducing the money to shelters through the Companion Animal Capital Fund.

The program will allow shelters to offer enhanced and specialized care for cats and dogs with money from the state -- the first time any state has introduced this type of program in the nation.

The Humane Society of Middletown is set to receive $439,000 to renovate its current shelter, with upgrades scheduled for quarantine and treatment areas.

Also, the SPCA of Westchester will be able to build a new facility with $500,000.
