On Tuesday, the Westchester Medical Center Health Network and Bon Secours Charity Health System announced a more than $40 million project to upgrade the Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis.

“We believed we could not only have a profound effect on the healthcare we delivered, but we believed that we could have a profound effect on the community in general,” said Michael Israel, president and CEO of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network.

The renovation calls for an expanded emergency room and a new main entrance. The project will also convert 36 medical and surgical rooms to from semi-private to private.

“It will also include an upgraded imaging suite, a newly designed bariatric center and a retail pharmacy,” said Mary Leahy, the Bon Secours Charity Health System CEO.

Last year, Bon Secours entered into a joint venture with WMC Health. This new project was made possible with a $24.5 million grant from the state. Officials say these changes will improve healthcare for those living in the Port Jervis area.

“There will be more jobs created," Israel said. "We will use more goods and services, so we will be an economic driver.”

The project will take about 22 months to complete. Construction is expected to begin in the spring.

“This is all part of the medical village concept, where much-needed care options and healthy lifestyle options will be available for residents at a convenient location," Leahy said.

Officials say no services will be discontinued because of these changes.
