HIGH FALLS, N.Y. --- The Eggs Nest in High Falls has been open since 1973.
"The moment he opened the place was a success," said Gillian Murphy, wife of the Eggs Nest owner Richard Murphy.
Saturday marked the restaurant's final day, after 43 years of service. Gillian said the closing is bittersweet.
"I know that there are a lot of happy memories for both the customers and for Richard too, he's had loads of fun. It's just been wonderful," she said.
The Egg's Nest is known for its meals, but also its colorful decor.
"Just a cool place to go for a quick bite to eat," Tayte Wollner said.
"We would always come to say hello and have that yummy sandwich," Leilani Gutierrez said.
Over the years, Murphy has made the restaurant his own personal art gallery.
"It's sad because it was unique and it had all these different things hanging and it was kind of like eye spy games going on," Gutierrez added.
Many people came to restaurant to sit amongst the artwork one last time.
Gillian who spoke on behalf of her husband says the attention the restaurant has received since news of its closing has been a bit overwhelming.
"It's really a joyful occasion for him and it's both an ending and a beginning and I think he's looking forward to beginning something else," Gillian said.
She says the restaurant will be cleaned and restored but there are no future plans for the space.
"It has been an honor to receive people and hear how much respect they have for both what he's created and who he is," she said.
