ELLENVILLE, N.Y. -- Richard Figueroa lives close to 9 Warren Street where police said they found 52-year-old Mari Gilbert's body in her apartment around 2:15 p.m. Saturday.

"Mari wasn't a bad person," Figueroa said. "She was really nice lady; a lot of people liked her. Most of the people who knew her liked her."

Figueroa said what’s even more disturbing is that police said Gilbert’s 27 year old daughter, Sarra killed her. She was charged with second degree murder.

"Anyone who knew her on a personal level would know that she was a good person, not a violent person," he said.

Ellenville Police said this has been the first homicide in the village in several years. Still yet Figueroa said what happened at 9 Warren Street, makes him feel unsafe.

"For it to happen like 15 feet from my window there was a murder it's like terrifying," he said.

Mari is the mother of Shannon Gilbert whose remains were found along Long island’s Atlantic Coast in 2011. Police said the deaths are not connected.

Wayne Biasi owns a building close to Warren Street. He told Time warner Cable News he was shocked to hear what happened, but he still thinks it’s a safe neighborhood.

"We don't know the circumstances yet, what happened and why,” he said.

"It's probably like one of the most shocking and unexpected things I've ever heard. Like you never hear about stuff like that in Ellenville to begin with,” Figueroa said.  “Murders don't happen [here.]”

Sarra Gilbert is being held at Ulster County jail without bail. Police have not given a motive or said what led them to believe Sarra killed her mother.

A press conference is scheduled for Monday at noon at the Village Hall.
