Residents pay tribute to a past civic leader that many remember as the "Mayor of Rosedale."
Community leaders joined City Council Member Donovan Richards to unveil James English Way in Rosedale on Monday. The sign is located on the corner of 242nd street and 138th avenue.
Residents remembered English as a gentle giant who helped bring back the Rosedale Civilian Patrol and helped found the neighborhood's civic association.
“He fought for better roads; he fought for better parks in this community,” Richards said. “He was really the mayor of Rosedale, and he lived his life and dedicated it to community service, which has really made this community a better community.”
“He did a great deal. From the minute he started he was just here for everybody,” said English’s wife, Anne English.
According to family members, English lived on 242nd street from 1954 until his death last year.
