CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. -- Movie theaters across Western New York are excited to welcome Star Wars fans amped to see the latest, highly-anticipated installment of the Star Wars franchise.
While they're invited to dress the part, accessories are at issue at many locations, including Regal Cinemas at the Walden Galleria. The theatre is not permitting any props or weapons, including lightsabers, and fans will not be allowed in wearing face paint, masks or hoods that cover their faces.
Dipson Theaters have a similar policy, and remind customers that they might be searched for safety reasons.
AMC also prohibits masks and face paint, and anything that would make others feel uncomfortable or would detract from the experience. They do, however, say fans can bring their lightsaber, but need to turn it off during the movie.
Back at the Walden Galleria Regal, Cheektowaga Police will have officers in the area checking things out more frequently than on a typical night; this as the theater adds manpower for security. Police advise anyone who's attending the movie tonight to be aware of their surroundings.
"Certainly, if you see something suspicious, tell somebody, report it," said Assistant Cheektowaga Police Chief Jim Speyer, "and just look around, just be careful like you would any other time. We can't let our guard down, but we want everyone to enjoy themselves and have a nice, safe night."
Film experts say advance ticket sales for the Force Awakens have surpassed $100 million across North America.
