SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Hundreds came out Saturday morning to the Saratoga Spa Park to hoof it for horses at the Run for the Horses 5K.
The event attracted over 350 runners walkers and even a few horses. The 5K brings together different thoroughbred retirement homes to raise money and awareness to what happens after a race horse retires. As Joslyn McArdle explains, during her battle with breast cancer she interacted with many retired race horses, which helped her in her recovery.
"It's very emotional at some points. They actually know emotion and recognize that and come right over to you. So they're very intuitive," said McArdle, a volunteer with the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation.
All of the race's proceeds will benefit local non-profits that rescue retired racehorses.
