Sources say more than 60 protesters were arrested after a demonstration in solidarity with Baltimore spilled into the streets of Manhattan Wednesday.

The demonstration was in response to the death of Freddie Gray, who suffered a spinal injury while in the custody of the Baltimore Police Department.

It began in Union Square with what organizers called the "Rise Up and Shut It Down Protest."

When protesters moved into the streets, police started making arrests. Some people NY1 spoke with sid that was unjustified.

"What we're trying to do is demonstrate something, a peaceful demonstration," said one protester. "I understand things can be agitated at times, but at the end of the day, we're not doing anything but walking."

"Nobody's winning in this situation, but I needed to show my support, and when I head about this rally, I said, 'There's no other place that I need to be but here,'" said another.

"We still believe this country can be better. That's why we are out here protesting," said a third.

Several groups of protesters went in several directions. Some wound up in Midtown, where there were more arrests. Others went in the other direction and were seen near the entrance to the Holland Tunnel.
