A member of the Middletown Police Department just received the Medal of Valor for demonstrating exceptional courage and bravery in service to his community.
Officer Evan Barone is being recognized by Gov. Kathy Hochul for his heroic actions.
“I’m incredibly grateful not only for this amazing, prestigious, honorable award, I’m grateful to be alive,” said Barone.
Back in August 2020, Officer Barone responded to a domestic violence incident while patrolling a neighborhood nearby. According to officials, a woman told Officer Barone that her ex-boyfriend was inside her home, armed with a gun, refusing to leave.
Police say Officer Barone came under fire when the man burst in firing a nine-millimeter handgun. The bullet passed through Officer Barone’s left arm, permanently damaging a nerve and shattering his bone. Another bullet to the chest was stopped by his bullet proof vest. This all allegedly happened while there was a car with children inside just a few feet away. Barone returned fire and then apprehended the gunman before applying a tourniquet to his own wound. Barone then called for help as soon as he could.
“This was a vicious attack on a police officer raised his ground, protecting bystanders all while being severely injured. This is why we are here to present officer brown with the 2020 Police Officer Medal of Valor,” said Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado.
Officer Barone is the first officer from the Middletown Police Department to receive this award. Middletown Mayor Joseph DeStefano said this award means a great deal for the city.
“The act of bravery by Officer Barone really is something that needs to be acknowledged and recognized not only by the community but by our state,” said Mayor DeStefano.
Officer Barone recently marked his fifth year with the Middletown Police Department.
