Ashani Mfuko wants to educate people about racism.
The Monroe woman recently posted a video on social media in which she said, “Racism is not dead. It is still alive and well, and it is not just the KKK. Racism is a mindset.”
The response was overwhelmingly supportive, and Mfuko knew she had to do more.
“It’s not enough to say ‘I’m not racist,’” she said. “You have to be anti-racist.”
She created a family-friendly monthly seminar called “Anti Racism School Is In Session.” Every month, she’ll be talking about different ways to be anti-racist.
She says people have to be actively working against racism, which can be easier said than done. The seminar aims to teach people how they can be better allies for the black community.
“So when you hear people say in response to Black Lives Matter, ‘well, all lives matter’ … All lives absolutely do matter, and we already know that, but there are people that do believe that black lives don’t matter,” Mfuko said.
The seminar starts Saturday, and Mfuko said she already has people signing up from almost a dozen states.
“Three things that anyone of any race can do right now to be more anti-racist,” Mfuko said, “is number one, listen. Listen with the intent of understanding. Number two, I would say, is get around people who are not like you. And the third thing I would say is to do your own research, because when you know more, and you know better, you can do better.”
