Inspire, also known as the Orange County Cerebral Palsy Association, is a non-profit that works extensively with special needs individuals.
It has tips for families who are in quarantine with a loved one who has a disability and may not be used to giving them 24/7 care.
- First, cut yourself a break. Most people are not special education teachers or therapists, and no one can expect parents to be.
- Second, talk with the people who supported your loved one before the pandemic and see if they have any suggestions.
- Finally, Rothschild says it’s important to do your research and look into a variety of resources that are available during the pandemic for those with special needs.
“It’s important to find out if there are other resources because there might be an easier way of doing something than what your school provider or agency provider is giving you, so there could be some websites or YouTube videos that are just as informational for your loved one,” said Jill Rothschild, director of disability services at Inspire.
