It was a week before the Warwick Drive-In Theater was scheduled to reopen when owner Beth Wilson was told the state of New York decided to close down all theaters in the state.
"We were trying to figure out how to get some entertainment to everybody during this crisis," said owner Beth Wilson.
So they petitioned the state for an exemption to the no-movie theater policy. A Hudson Valley classic, the drive-in theater allows visitors to drive their cars up to large outdoor movie screens and watch films from the comfort of their cars.
According to the owners, they would have visitors park their cars 19 feet apart, allowing visitors plenty of distance between each other.
"We’re working with different app companies and people to try to get our snack bar open as a minimal food that we can get in and out; maybe do a car service or a pick-up service," said Wilson.
They're also working to set up online ticket sales to further limit contact. If their waiver is approved by the state, the owners hope to reopen by mid-April and offer locals with cabin fever a chance to get out of the house.
"Take the kids out instead of looking at the four walls and the TV; even though they're watching a movie, it’s a different experience out here," said Wilson.
