Summer camp is usually a go-to option for parents who want to keep their kids engaged while out of school but that can be tough if the bills are piling up.

Organizations like RECAP are stepping up to help families in need by providing financial assistance.

RECAP is a nonprofit in Newburgh that works with families in low-income communities. Michele McKeon, RECAP’s chief operating officer, says the group was able to provide financial assistance thanks to money from the federal government.

“We are able to pay up to, I believe it's 12 weeks of a summer camp, or a day care, tuition, which is really helpful for the families that we currently serve,” said McKeon.

According to the American Camp Association, the average cost of summer camp is around $200 per day, and for overnight camp it’s about $500. Prices are expected to increase in 2023.

For parents like Regina Bernal, who fit in the 11.7% of families in Orange County who have been struggling to make ends meet, the tuition will help cover the cost and leave extra money for other expenses.

“I can save that money towards other things like taking my child on trips or whatnot,” said Bernal.

McKeon says so far, 25 families received assistance. The group wants to help more through a partnership with the Newburgh Armory Unity Center.

“If we can help lift everyone in our community, it benefits all of our community,” said McKeon.

The last day to apply for the free tuition is September 20. Families in need must fill out an application prior to that date, providing monthly income and proof of residency.
