Marc Molinaro told Capital Tonight that COVID-19 has made some county roadwork staffers ill, which could have affected snow removal. But the Dutchess County executive said they were able to bring in some people to fill out the staffing for this snowstorm.
Molinaro, who holds the title of president of the New York State County Executives Association, also weighed on the probability that the next stimulus package will likely not include state and local aid.
“We fund our Sheriff’s departments, we’re the ones who fund advocates against domestic violence, we’re responding to child abuse cases, we’re out shoveling the snow right now. Not to mention we’re the ones doing contact tracing, monitoring, in my case, 1,300 active cases,” Molinaro said. “We have the most people hospitalized due to COVID since the beginning of the pandemic. I don’t know how they expect us to do the job that they ask us to do without giving us the resources to do it.”
In a dual statement released on Wednesday by the New York State Association of Counties, Molinaro and NYSAC president Jack Marren said, “Congress's failure to reach a compromise on pandemic relief aid to states and local governments not only fails New Yorkers now, but it fails generations to come.”
