Once limited to national chains with proceeds going to unknown places, thrift shopping has come much closer to home.
“Good morning everybody,” bellows out to a line of at Middletown’s United Presbyterian Church. “The thrift shop is open!” says a volunteer.
Ashley Vandermuelen is one customer of dozens combing through racks. A regular at thrift shops, she’s on a mission.
“I haven’t been in a few weeks, but I came back so I could look for some clothing for a new job I got… there’s always something, like a treasure,” said Vandermuelen.
These days, second-hand shopping is turning into an inherently community-driven experience that's gaining in popularity.
