Poor air quality has been an issue across New York for the last week and unfortunately, may continue to plague the state for the next few months. Natural Resources Canada forecasts above-normal fire activity across most of that country through September as the unprecedented fire season continues.
While there has been progress with the raging wildfires in northwest Quebec, it’s not even close to being contained. Since the wildfires are mainly affecting huge forests with virtually no residents or an endangered species population, the resources to completely contain the fire will not be used.
All we need is a cold front to blow through and we will, once again, get that smoke to engulf much of New York State. A strong north and northwest wind means we’re right back into terrible air quality levels.
When an Air Quality Alert is issued, it will be best to remain indoors as much as possible with all doors and windows shut. Make sure you have high-quality air filters in your heating and air-conditioning units keep contaminants from entering the home.
If you have to go outside and you are sensitive to the poor air quality, wearing an N95 mask is recommended.
