Over the last several years, a really snowy winter weather season in Oswego has been hard to come by. The last time the city saw over 100 inches of snow in a given season was back during the winter of 2018-2019.
I grew up just north of New York City and down there we don't receive nearly as much snow as Central New York. Hence, when I attended SUNY Oswego, I was blown away by the amount of snow we got!
My first winter in Oswego was 2010-2011 and during that season, the city recorded 178.3 inches of snow. That was by far the most snow I've ever experienced. Truth be told, there has not been another winter with that much snow in the Port City.
Only 47 inches of snow was measured in Oswego this past season, ranking it as the least snowiest on record.
Three of the last four winter seasons received less than 60 inches.
With records dating back to 1926, Oswego saw only three winter seasons with less than 50 inches of snow. In addition to the most recent season, the other two seasons were 1952-1953 and 1932-1933.
On average, a winter season typically brings the city around 117.9 inches of snow, which is why you usually think of snow when you hear the name Oswego. Given this, when a season sees under 50 inches, it’s a major deal!
Since 1926, Oswego only had measurable snowfall six times during the month of May. None of those months saw measurable snow accumulate to more than half an inch. With nearly 100 years of records in the books, I'd say the odds of Oswego getting more than 0.7 inches of snow to fall this May are quite low.
