Late August marks the end to many things: summer vacation, afternoons by the pool, long days, and hot and steamy weather.

But why focus on what ends when you can focus on what begins? It’s time for the Great New York State Fair.

What You Need To Know

  • It's time for the Great New York State Fair

  • The first stretch of the fair is forecast to be very warm and humid with spot storms possible

  • The long-term forecast show a drier second half to the fair

Ah, there are such possibilities in the air, like "what fried food item will I indulge in," "what will that beautiful butter sculpture look like" and "how much milk can I drink in one sitting?"

The other thing in the air — weather, of course — can bring just about any weather you can think of.

Now, getting into the nerdy numbers of it, the average highs for this time in August are pretty nice in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees. The problem is we can get big swings in temperatures. This is paired with high humidity and the changeable weather as we approach fall.

Long-time State Fair goers have all the stories to tell, from sweltering heat waves and humidity to cool and rainy days that make you give that chilled milk a second thought.

Good thing I have given this year’s State Fair outlook some careful consideration and have a short-term and long-term outlook.

This year, we are starting off the State Fair warm and humid with highs in the 80s and dew points in the 70s. It's not downright hot and humid, but still pretty warm and a bit uncomfortable. We have scattered showers and storms in the forecast, but no total washouts.

We look to dry out early in the week with some hot and humid conditions, but showers will make a return for later in the week. It looks like for the start of the fair temperatures stay above average and the humidity stays high.

Heading towards the end of the fair, long-term forecasts look drier with seasonable conditions.

Get out and enjoy the Great New York State Fair!
